Albuquerque Little Theatre was founded in 1930 by civic-minded citizens led by Irene Fisher, a reporter for the New Mexico Tribune. The idea began after Fisher attended a lecture by actress Kathryn Kennedy O’Connor, who had moved to New Mexico for health reasons in 1927. Fisher helped raise the Theatre’s first $1,000 operating budget, and O’Connor became its Director.
ALT spent its first six years at the KiMo Theatre before moving in 1936 to its current home at 224 San Pasquale SW, just south of Old Town. The building, designed by architect John Gaw Meem, was the first Albuquerque structure built by the Works Progress Administration under Roosevelt’s New Deal.
O’Connor retired as ALT’s director in 1961 and was succeeded by Bernard “Bernie” Thomas, who led the Theatre until his retirement after the 50th anniversary season in 1980. He was followed by technical director Michael Myers, who served as producing director until 1986, then by Sandy Brady, and later Carol Fleming, who became General Manager in 1988 and remained until 1996. Larry D. Parker was appointed Executive Director in 1997 and continued producing theatre through the 2005–06 season.
In 2006, ALT split the Executive Director role into Artistic Director (Peter Kierst) and Managing Director (Erin Moots). They launched the 2006–07 season with renewed commitment, and in 2007 Theresa Reid also stepped into leadership.
In 2008, Henry Avery—bringing extensive Broadway and community theatre experience—was hired as Executive Director and later also became Artistic Director. His decades of experience have infused ALT with new energy.
ALT’s history also includes notable celebrity connections. Vivian Vance, who performed in ALT’s first production in 1930, later won the first-ever Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy. Her Emmy is proudly displayed in ALT’s lobby. Other well-known performers who have appeared on our stage include Don Knotts, Bill Daily, Ann B. Davis, Nancy Kulp, and Maureen O’Sullivan.

ALT continues its tradition of true community theatre by offering Albuquerque residents both quality entertainment and opportunities to participate in live productions. As a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, ALT engages more than 500 volunteers in roles ranging from box office and front of house to backstage, onstage, and board service.
