SYNOPSIS
Welcome to the Renaissance, where the Black Plague has ceded power to the Puritans, farthingales and codpieces are the latest fashion trend, and the biggest celebrity in England is a playwright named William Shakespeare. In the midst of all this excitement, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are trying to keep their acting company afloat. In a desperate attempt to out-Bard the Bard, Nick consults with a soothsayer, who informs him that the future of theatre involves acting, singing, and dancing — sometimes all at once! As the Bottom brothers strive to write the world’s very first “musical”, they find themselves caught in a bitter battle with the Bard and the play’s the thing. Something Rotten! is a hysterical, joyous celebration of everything you love about Broadway.
AVAILABLE ROLES:
Seeking performers of all ethnicities, ages, and types.
*Note: The role of Portia has been cast. HOWEVER, we are seeking strong Understudies for all roles.
NICK BOTTOM: Male, 30s – 40s (Vocal Range: B2-A4). A struggling renaissance writer at the end of his rope. Nigel’s older brother. Incredibly jealous of the success of William Shakespeare and will do anything to beat him. Seeking a great comedic actor who sings, tap dance skill a plus.
NIGEL BOTTOM: Male, 20s – 30s (Vocal Range: High Baritone/Tenor to G#4). Nick’s younger brother. A sweetly naïve young writer and poet, perhaps a little awkward. He falls in love with Portia and ultimately finds confidence in himself through art and love. Seeking a great comedic actor who sings very well.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: Male, 20s – 30s (Vocal Range: Rock Tenor to A4) Over-the-top and cocky, a true rock star of his time. He is the renaissance Mick Jagger or Billy Idol. British accent. Seeking a great comedic actor that sings and dances very well. Tap dance skills a plus.
THOMAS NOSTRADAMUS: Male, 30s – 50s (Vocal Range: C3-F4) A soothsayer who almost sees the future correctly. A bit loony. He predicts that Nick and Nigel will write a musical. Seeking a comedic actor who sings and moves very well.
BEA: Female, 30s – 40s (Vocal Range: Mezzo with belt, D3-D5) Nick’s wife and “right hand man”. She loves and supports him despite his questionable decision making and lack of success. Bea resorts to dressing up like a male to make ends meet and to prove to Nick she can be an actor. Seeking a great comedic actress who sings very well.
BROTHER JEREMIAH: Male, 40s – 50s (Rock Baritone to G4) Portia’s father. A Puritan with deeply repressed homoerotic tendencies. He despises playwrights, poets and all things ungodly. Seeking a great comedic actor who sings very well.
PORTIA (UNDERSTUDY): Female, 20s – 30s (Vocal Range: Soprano with mix, G3-F5) An adorably quirky Puritan girl whom Nigel meets on the street. They fall madly in love with each other over their mutual love for Shakespeare and poetry. Seeking a great comedic actress who sings very well.
MINSTREL: Male, 20s – 30s (Vocal Range: Tenor to A4) The fun-loving charismatic narrator of the show, and sings the opening numbers of each act. Must sing and dance well.
SHYLOCK: Male, 50s – 60s. Nick and Nigel are in debt to him. He becomes an investor in their musical. Seeking a great comedic actor.
LORD CLAPHAM: Male, 40s – 60s. Patron of the theatre. Flamboyant and extremely posh. Seeking a great comedic actor that sings well. British accent a plus.
ENSEMBLE: Seeking strong dancers and tappers, as well as singers & character actors with strong movement ability. Most will dance heavily, but some will have featured character roles and dance less. Many may understudy principal roles and/or swing alternate dance tracks.
