The Gin Game is a tour de force for two seasoned actors. The premise is simple: Two elderly people, Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, meet in an old -folks home, strike up a conversation, and end up playing gin rummy together. Weller thinks of himself as quite the expert but Fonsia keeps winning. A week, then two, go by and each time they play, Fonsia wins. Weller is beside himself with frustration and angrily insists that luck is against him. During their games they each share some intimate details of their life histories until, finally, they learn which buttons to push as the games become increasingly personal. We begin to see how the dynamics of their relationship is a mirror for their lives and this is the final act when they let it all hang out. Debi and Peter Kierst don’t miss a beat as we are drawn into their “game” of life.

The roles of Fonsia Dorsey and Weller Martin will be played by, respectfully, Debi and Peter Kierst. Directed by Nancy Sellin.

Debi Kierst is a long-time Albuquerque resident and has worked at various theatres all over town.  Most recently you may have seen her as Eleanor in “The Lion in Winter”.  Amanda in “The Glass Menagerie”, Mary Tyrone in “Long Day’s Journey into Night”, Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, Mary in “Mary Stuart”, and Lady Bracknell in “The Importance of Being Earnest”. This coming summer, hopefully, she will be playing Malvolio in “Twelfth Night”, for New Mexico Shakespeare Festival.  Debi has also recently begun to work in film and tv and is a member of SAG/AFTRA.

Peter Kierst has been part of Albuquerque theatre since 1972. He was interim Artistic Director of ALT from 2006-2007, and last appeared on stage here as Salieri in “Amadeus” and the Stage Manager in “Our Town.”  Other favorite roles include Hamlet, Romeo, Iago, Shylock, Richard III, Oscar Wilde in “Diversions and Delights”, Andrew in “Sleuth”, Algernon in “The Importance of Being Earnest”, Didi in “Waiting for Godot”, Thomas More in “A Man For All Seasons”, and George in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”  He is Artistic Director of The Vortex’s New Mexico Shakespeare Festival, and will direct “Hamlet” this summer.

The Gin Game will be available for viewing March 12 – 21. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30PM and Sundays at 2PM.

Tickets are $12 for single, $20 for a couple, $25 for a small group (3-4 people), and $30 for a large group (5+).
