It’s been a tough week for our nation, particularly the people in Oklahoma and other tornado ravaged states. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we count our blessings. One blessing for all of us at ALT is the opportunity to perform and try to bring some joy to the wonderful people who come to our shows. We embrace that opportunity again this weekend, as we open the Mel Brooks’ hit Broadway musical, “The Producers”. This hilarious show is guaranteed to make you laugh hysterically, and give you a little respite from life’s worries. Based on Mel Brooks’ classic film, this big Broadway musical sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly “boffo” hit, winning a record 12 Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, thereby bilking their backers out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way through finding a show, hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. THE PRODUCERS takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!”
